Avoidable interventions

Otter software uses clever ways to minimize the number of human interventions for most common shopping scenarios.

Some items may have multiple barcodes.

Honest mistake – a customer scans the barcode of a single bottle instead of a 6 pack. Otter software identifies that a 6 pack was placed in the bagging area and displays a prompt ‘Did you mean to scan a 6 pack?’ If the customer clicks YES, it will replace the single bottle with a 6 pack. If NO is selected, only then the attendant will be notified.

This approach has proven to reduce the number of preventable interventions and avoid confrontations with the customer.

Picklist Assistant

In grocery retail more than 60% of shopping carts include at least one unpacked item.

Otter SCO software automatically identifies non-packed items with Picklist Assistant. Picklist Assistant is a Computer Vision application to visually identify non packaged items, without the need to select it from the SCO menu. It reduces the time to scan an unpackaged item from 9 seconds (manual selection via Picklist menu) to 2 seconds. Picklist Assistant significantly reduces the number of interventions and assistance requests.

  • Identified item can pop-up as recommendation (‘Is this the correct item?’)
  • Item can be automatically added to the receipt without customer confirmation.

With Picklist Assistant, a single SCO will serve 6-10 more customers per hour, increasing SCO throughput by 13% and increasing hourly revenue by €210.

Crime Predictor

Otter SCO software uses AI tools to mitigate checkout fraud. Crime Predictor visually identifies scanned items and checks whether the scanned product matches the product image in the product database. It adds a visual level of security for loss scenarios that traditional weight based scale systems cannot cover.

Crime Predictor protects against:

  • Picklist fraud – selecting a cheaper item in the picklist vs a more expensive one.
  • Barcode switching – barcode of a cheaper item is placed on a more expensive item.
  • Non-scanned items – some items not scanned / left in cart during checkout.
  • Non-payment – items are removed from the bagging area before the payment is made and security scale is not used.

Crime Predictor can be integrated into the store’s video surveillance and security system, so store security staff can respond immediately.

Real-world deployment data indicates that with Crime Predictor losses at the self-checkouts can be even lower than in traditional checkouts.

Age verification

Otter software reduces time and resources required for age verification.

With Otter SCO software, age can be approved from a remote location via video camera. A single employee can oversee multiple stores. If age cannot be approved remotely due to uncertainty, the platform will notify a local store attendant.

AI assistant can approve age for customers where it is highly certain that the customer is of legal age (e.g. older than 35) Bottom line for manual intervention can be adjusted (e.g. 30+ approved by AI, all under 30s approved manually). The software includes 2D and 3D anti-spoofing technology and is GDPR compliant, with no images or data stored. The system operates at 99% accuracy rate.

39% of all interventions are age-related. Utilizing remote verification and introducing AI age verification framework can significantly boost SCO throughput.
